UC scientists are working on alternatives to methyl bromide, which has been used for years as a soil fumigant, particularly in strawberry fields. Methyl bromide is an odorless, colorless gas that the Environmental Protection Agency has classified as an ozone-depleting substance and a national phase-out is currently underway.
