Archives fuel the future
Livermore Lab archivist Maxine Trost is tasked with preserving the history of the 20th century's most dramatic era of scientific discovery. The lab archives contain thousands of documents still used for current research and computer simulations as well as a few mysteries like why some nuclear tests were named after cheeses.
Inside UCOP: Stories for and about Office of the President staff
Patricia Derieg, an administrative assistant in Student Affairs, shows off the handmade dolls she was selling along with her quilt creations at the UCOP holiday craft fair. The annual event is the only place Derieg sells her handmade items - a labor of love and a prolific hobby.
Fight holiday stress
UC Employee Assistance Programs can help staff get through trying times. These confidential programs, based at every campus and at the Office of the President, offer free, unlimited short-term counseling sessions – just what you need to get through the family and work pressures that surface in December. Jude Sharp coordinates the EAP program at OP and also holds lunchtime workshops on a variety of self-help topics such as managing change.
Donations further medical education, research
Students at the five UC medical schools honor those who donate their bodies to science at annual candlelit memorial services. Systemwide reforms have rebuilt this important program.
Voluntary separation comments due Dec. 19
Final details of the voluntary UCOP separation program will be released in January. Employee comments on the proposed plan are due by Dec. 19.
Did You Know...
- The University of California enrolls more low-income students than any other top university, public or private, in the country. According to the U.S. Dept. of Education, 31.9 percent of UC students enrolled in 2006-07 received Pell Grants.
- Among the top 40 national universities, three UC campuses led in percentage of Pell grant recipients: No. 1 UCLA with 36.6 percent; No. 2 UC San Diego with 32.8 percent and No. 3 UC Berkeley with 32.3 percent. The next highest on the list was the University of Southern California with 18 percent.
- Other UC undergraduate campuses enrolled high percentages of low-income students: UC Riverside at 43 percent, UC Merced at 40.8 percent, UC Davis at 31.5 percent, UC Irvine at 26.4 percent, UC Santa Cruz at 26.3 percent and UC Santa Barbara at 25.3.
