University of California President Janet Napolitano, former governor of Arizona, made the following statement today (April 10) about the death of Raul H. Castro, who served as the 14th governor of Arizona after his election in 1974:
“Raul Castro was a true political trailblazer. He served the people of Arizona with integrity and dedication as a governor, judge and county attorney, and the nation as U.S. ambassador to three Latin American countries.
“Throughout his life, he remained committed to democratic ideals and to expanded participation by Latinos in public service. He has left a lasting legacy. My heart and thoughts are very much with his family and all who mourn his passing.”
