Protect life-saving research

Federal funding for biomedical research is at risk.

We need your help to safeguard the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the future of medical innovation.

On Feb. 7, the NIH announced a new plan to drastically cut funding for life-saving biomedical research. This funding pays for lab space, equipment, utilities and other critical infrastructure needed for scientific discovery. They have done this without warning and in violation of bipartisan laws passed by Congress. If allowed to continue, this cut will be crippling to the University of California, the pursuit of science and our nation’s leadership in biomedical innovation.

The longstanding partnership between universities and the federal government has led to some of the most powerful and impactful research discoveries in human history, as well as new technologies and industries that translate into well-paying jobs.

Why this funding matters:

  • Critical Support: Funding for facilities and administrative costs support vital components of research, including lab space, compliance with federal regulations, and IT and administrative support.

  • Economic Impact: This policy change could slash UC’s research funding by hundreds of millions of dollars each year, undermining California’s biotechnology sector and the broader U.S. economy.

  • Global Leadership: For decades, NIH funding has propelled American research institutions to the forefront of medical discoveries, leading to life-saving treatments for cancer, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.

We are asking Congress to oppose this catastrophic change. Join us by emailing your lawmakers and asking them to work across party lines to urge the administration to suspend this abrupt policy shift.

Together, we can protect the future of biomedical research and innovation. Will you join us?
