UC is facing tough state budget cuts. Will you speak up for UC?
You may have seen the news: In order to pass a balanced budget in 2025-26, California Gov. Gavin Newsom had to make some tough choices. That includes a proposed 7.95% cut to the University’s base budget and the deferral of our 2025-26 compact funding.
Through past support from the Governor and the Legislature, we’ve made big strides to close academic achievement gaps, hold down college costs, and help more Californians get a UC education.
Thanks to UC’s multi-year funding compact with the Governor, UC has enrolled more Californians than ever before, with significant growth in transfer students, low-income students and those from groups historically underrepresented in higher education. A cut to the University’s funding will jeopardize that important progress and hurt California students.
We’re talking about real consequences for our students: Fewer course offerings, bigger classes, and reductions in vital academic support services –– changes that can impede a student’s ability to graduate on time.
As you know, California depends on a diverse and highly educated workforce. Budget cuts that limit UC’s ability to prepare the next generation of teachers, health care workers and researchers impact the whole state.
That’s why we are sounding the alarm. It is up to the members of the Legislature to discuss and debate the Governor’s budget proposal. Your voices have the power to shape the outcome. Grassroots advocacy is a powerful tool—and it’s most effective when more voices join the call. Offices log every email, every phone call, and every social media tag. The more messages they receive, the more visibility and momentum we gain, and the bigger impact we have on budget and policy. We’re calling on this community to rally, leverage our collective power, and ensure that UC continues to thrive for generations to come!
