The University of California, Riverside will launch National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with an evening performance about the life journey of Eric Barr, a UC Riverside professor emeritus who survived a major stroke.
The performance will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 in the University Theatre. This one-man show called “A Piece of My Mind” is based on Barr’s struggle with grueling and frustrating rehabilitation sessions, and his gratitude for the support of family and friends. The show is candid, funny and hopeful.
The performance is the first of three campus events planned by UC Riverside in partnership with the City of Riverside and the California Department of Rehabilitation to highlight the benefits of recruiting employees with disabilities and celebrating their contributions in the workplace. Other events include a “Walk and Roll” and a workshop on disability awareness. These events are free, however, a reservation is required.
“The City of Riverside is eager to work with such impressive partners to bring attention to the valued contributions made every day by our disabled employees,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said. “One of our City’s core values is inclusivity, and one of the ways we can demonstrate that is through worthy efforts such as this.”
