UC Irvine is ranked fourth and UC Santa Cruz seventh in the Top 100 Universities Under 50 Years Old rankings from Times Higher Education.
The rankings are meant to show which nations are challenging the United States and the United Kingdom as higher education powerhouses while offering insights into which institutions may be future world leaders, according to Times Higher Education, which publishes an annual ranking of the world's top universities.
In ranking young universities, the Times used the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but with a reduced weighting for subjective indicators of academic reputation.
