UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz are the top two American universities under 50 years old and among the best in the world in rankings released today (April 30) by Times Higher Education.
Overall, UC Irvine ranked seventh and UC Santa Cruz 11th in the British publishing company’s 100 Under 50 rankings of universities.
“We are pleased to be named — for the third year in a row — the No.1 university in the nation under 50,” said UC Irvine Chancellor Michael V. Drake. “And we’re certainly not stopping here as we approach our 50th anniversary in 2015. UC Irvine has stellar students, faculty, staff, programs and research that will make us a powerful and innovative educational force as we continue to grow and thrive.”
Times Higher Education recalibrates the methodology used for its World University Rankings to reflect the characteristics of younger universities, giving less weight to academic prestige, for its 100 Under 50 list.
“The Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 is a hotlist of the world’s most dynamic and exciting young universities,” said Phil Baty, Times Higher Education’s rankings editor. “The list contains many global superstars, including some of the most exceptional and well-funded East Asian institutions, so to make it into the top 100 is a significant achievement in itself.”
Research, teaching environment, international collaboration, citations of campus research by other scientists and research innovations were among the performance indicators looked at for the rankings.
