Nine UC campuses are among the best in the world, according to rankings issued Monday by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities assessed the top 500 universities based on six indicators. These include the number of award-winning staff and alumni and the number of articles published in prestigious journals Nature and Science.
Schools ranked as follows:
3. UC Berkeley
12. UCLA
14. UC San Diego
21. UC San Francisco
42. UC Santa Barbara
58. UC Irvine
75. UC Davis
83. UC Santa Cruz
151-200. UC Riverside
UC Berkeley moved up in the rankings by one spot over last year. UC campuses have been ranked since the inaugural list in 2003.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities evaluates universities based on six criteria: the number of recipients of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals among alumni and staff; the number of Highly Cited Researchers; the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; the number of articles in the Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance.
