Eight UC campuses placed in the top 200 of this year's Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
UC Berkeley placed ninth, UCLA at 13th, UC Santa Barbara 35th, UC San Diego 38th, UC Davis 44th, UC Irvine 96th, UC Santa Cruz 122th and UC Riverside 154th in rankings of 400 undergraduate universities from around the world.
The California Institute of Technology supplanted Harvard, which dropped to fourth, as this year's top-ranked university, just ahead of Oxford and Stanford, which tied for second. UC Berkeley was the highest-rated public institution from the United States.
The Times rankings rate research universities in the areas of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
The United States has dominated the rankings in previous years. This year that trend continued, with U.S. universities holding seven of the top 10 places; another 76 U.S. institutions were in the top 200.
UC Berkeley rose two spots from 11th in last year's rankings in a year when many U.S. universities slipped. It's a trend that was highlighted in analysis of the top 200 by the Times.
