UC Davis, UCLA and UC Merced have been selected by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2015 Community Engagement Classification. The honor recognizes colleges and universities with an institutional focus on community engagement.
The Carnegie Foundation defines community engagement as "collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity."
UCLA was among the foundation's first honorees in 2006. “This recognition reflects what has long been a priority at UCLA — partnering with the community to help address some of our most difficult issues and improve day-to-day life,” said professor Patricia Turner, vice provost of undergraduate education in the UCLA College.
"We believe scholarly engagement is a fundamentally important part of the academic mission of UC Davis," said Chancellor Linda Katehi, "and appreciate the affirmation of the alignment of UC Davis' mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices that support dynamic community engagement."
Added UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland, “We want to support our region in ways that we can, and we believe strongly that our faculty, staff and students are enriched by working with local communities.”
