On March 5 and 6, Hilal Elver, the newly appointed United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, will appear at two public events at the UCLA School of Law to discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding the right to food. In her role at the U.N., she monitors food security issues and the right to food globally, conducts country visits, reports to U.N. bodies and communicates with states and concerned parties regarding alleged violations.
On Thursday, March 5, Elver will participate in a discussion from 5-6 p.m. in room 1430 of the law school, On Friday, March 6, also in room 1430, she will be a featured speaker at the 2015 Journal of International Law and Foreign Affairs symposium, “Realizing the Right to Food: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century,” from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The symposium will draw leading academics and practitioners in the field and serve as a forum for discussing several critical topics that relate to Elver’s work. These issues include the impact of global trade in agricultural products on the right to food; the threat of climate change and environmental degradation; and the mechanisms and tools to enhance implementation, enforcement and accountability of the right to food.
Both events are free of charge, but reservations are required. RSVP here.
